CBRRA Newsletter April 2015

The Camps Bay & Clifton Ratepayers & Residents Association is holding a Public Meeting on

MONDAY, 13 APRIL 2015
@ 18h30
VENUE: The Rotunda, The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay
Everyone is welcome!

Below follows an update on some recent issues that deserves your attention:
CLIFTON 4TH BEACH DEVELOPMENT – 750 CAR PARKING GARAGE, SHOPPING CENTRE, HOTEL, RESIDENTIAL IN FRAGILE COASTAL GREEN SPACE!
The iconic piece of land where La Med used to be (now the Bungalow restaurant), the Glen Country Club plus bowling lawns, part of the tennis courts and cricket field are to be sold by the City of Cape Town for well over R100 million. The proposed sale will result in the development of an 3-level underground parking garage with 750 bays, 2750m² of commercial retail space and a residential complex. It is doubtful wether the final development will be less than 10,000m² (larger than the Garden Centre).
Our Ward Councillors have claimed to be unaware of this proposal yet it appears Developers discussions with Council have been ongoing for some 4 years! According to the council, the properties were part of the mayor Patricia de Lille’s “strategic asset development initiative”. Another ASSAULT on our Green Spaces and Sports Clubs.

We must not allow the Clifton Development to become a fait accompli; Ratepayers must stand together to prevent the face of our area from changing completely and irrevocably.
The CBRRA has joined with the Clifton Bungalow Association and addressed a letter of objection to the City in this regard. You can read it ‹‹here››. The residents of the area need to stand together to head off land grabs by the mayor which are only of benefit to chosen developers.

Unsung service to our suburb...
The one and only Arthur and Paulene Shephard ( settled here not many years ago from U.K) have done wonders with the LITTLE GLEN and surrounds, restoring it to its former glory, paths and fences upgraded, vegetation controlled, security enhanced. All the time and effort expended  including soliciting support from nearby neighbours ( some of whom have been particularly generous!!) could not have been all fun but what RESULTS he has achieved, and  this on top of his C.B.Watch Administration, patrolling, regular Newsletters and assisting other areas when requested.
THANKS,THANKS and THANKS again the SHEPHARDS!s.

Well done to the Council beach cleaning team
BEACH CLEANING of the Camps Bay and Clifton beaches has been outstanding…….every morning teams are hard at it and by 7.30 one would not have guessed what they looked like the evening before! Similarly attention to lawns, walkways and small parks etc. has on the whole been excellent, as has the control of Public Events on the front.

General Security
No longer the remit of CBRRA the efforts of Camps Bay Watch/Camps Bay Safety & Security Trust have been largely instrumental in making Camps Bay the SAFEST SUBURB in the PENINSULA….to keep it that way please continue to be, or become, involved in this initiative! Planning in our suburb
Planning matters and applications have increased in the last while. In the past few months, many applications have involved community input and resulted in legal agreements between developers/owners and CBRRA/neighbours. Exco member and Green Point Park designer, Johan van Papendorp, has assisted Village & Life in the upgrade of the "Stone Cottages" at the bottom of Geneva Drive to ensure that the upgrade of the buildings respects their heritage value. Your Exco do their best to act in the interests of the Suburb as a whole……..it would be wonderful if some of the ‘regular complainers’ would offer to become involved instead of moaning and asking the Committee to look after “my interests”.

Blinkwater/Harrison Matter
After almost 10 years we are nearly at the finish line. The Exco is about to enter into an agreement with the City Council on terms acceptable to both parties; ± R290,000.00 will be paid to Council (considerably less than anticipated at the time); R100,00.00 to be paid initially and thereafter R5,000.00 per month until amount fully paid. We want to thank all members for their continued support and patience in this matter which we still believe has seen the Council ‘punishing Ratepayers’ for attempting to defend the suburb against bad planning decisions.

Join the committee
We again appeal for fresh faces to join our Committee! We need all the help we can get to maintain Camps Bay as the wonderful suburb it is.
