We’re proud to recognise World Drowning Prevention Day by sharing how we continue to do our part in developing valuable lifesaving skills, resources and abilities in our community.
Yesterday we had a large group of passionate lifeguards and junior lifeguards successfully qualify under the great supervision of our Clifton Instructing team.
As a club we are honoured to do our part towards growing the impact that lifesaving can have on multiple generations in our country.
Lifesaving South Africa has termed this year’s World Drowning Prevention Day programme “Supervision”.
Through the correct and uninterrupted supervision of youth, children, and toddlers in and around aquatic resources many drownings can be avoided.
Ladles of Love smashed a world record by by building the largest mosaic of Madiba’s face – created entirely out of food cans.
Cape Town CBD- based NGO Ladles of Love broke a world record on Mandela Day yesterday, Monday July 18, by building the largest mosaic of Madiba’s face – created entirely out of cans of food.
The event took place in Johannesburg and Cape Town simultaneously, with the Cape Town event being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Johannesburg saw 32 040 food cans placed on the South African flag mosaic, with Cape Town seeing 56 685 food cans placed on the Madiba mosaic.
At the end of the day, the food cans were packed up and will be given to communities in need in the coming weeks.
After the record attempt was complete, Ladles of Love founder Danny Dilberto thanked everyone for their contribution. “Madiba is a proud example of activism and today was a good example of activism and collaboration.
“Today was huge, and the spirit of Ubuntu in both cities was incredible. We placed around 90 000 food cans on the mosaics across the two cities and we’ve raised so much in terms of actual food and support to carry on with our mission to feed as many people as we can for as long as we can, and we cannot thank those that got involved enough.”
This is not Ladles of Love’s first attempt at a world record. The world record for the “longest line of food cans” was smashed by more than double at the V&A Waterfront on August 29 last year with a 6.7km line of 94 560 food cans.
The previous year, the world record for the “most amount of sandwiches made in one hour” was broken by 304 000 home-made sandwiches, compared to the previous record of 115 000.
Apart from the record-breaking event, there were other activities which people could participate in to contribute 67 minutes of goodwill for Mandela Day.
Activities included a knitting station, where people could knit 15cm x 15cm squares to be made into scarves and blankets; a chopping station, where people could chop up vegetables to be sent to community soup kitchens; and a sandwich making station for distribution to early childhood development centres.
By the end of the day, 1.3 tonnes of vegetables were chopped up and donated in Johannesburg, with 2.5 tonnes chopped and donated in Cape Town.
A total of 55 000 sandwiches were made in both cities.
It was a pleasure to attend the Green Point Rate Payers AGM last night and to mark their 15 years as a community organisation, working for the benefit of a better Green Point!
A small portion of my ward falls into their footprint - but perhaps one of the busiest portions as its the DHL Stadium, Urban Park, Shared fields etc.
Thank you to the Exec for their hard work and dedication and the continued donation of time, energy and passion in representing their community. Lovely that Liz Knight was recognized and honoured for her incredible and continued hard work and the many projects she has spearheaded in the area. A huge thank you as well to Steve Massey who deals with all the event applications on their behalf also know sits on the CPF.
I was invited to the Green Point Ratepayers AGM last night which was to a packed room at Hamilton’s RFC, as a guest speaker along with Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and GPCID CEO Marc Truss. A great info sharing opportunity for our Mayor to set the scene to where Cape Town is going, me to report on some facts and figures around the ward and Marc to explain more on the GPCID extension from Gallows Hill to Ultra Liquors along Main.

City resumes rollout of home composting containers
After a lockdown-induced break in the programme, the City this week resumed the rollout of home composting containers at Sub-Council offices. This forms part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the breakdown of organic waste at landfills. The City of Cape Town is happy to announce that the rollout of Home Composting containers resumed this week in Sub-council 19. The City of Cape Town plans to distribute a total of 600 containers per Sub-council area in the next phase of the home composting rollout. This phase of the programme will run between July and November 2022. A total of 12 600 containers will be issued on a first come, first served basis. So far, 300 containers were distributed to prospective home composters on Monday 18 July, and a further 300 will be up for grabs at the Fish Hoek Civic Hall tomorrow from 14:00 to 18:00. From here the programme will move to Sub-council 1, with 300 containers available for collection at the Saxonsea City Hall on Monday 25 July 2022, and 300 more available from Blaauwberg Community Hall on Saturday 23 July 2022. The rollout will then move through to other areas. Residents should please keep an eye on the following www.capetown.gov.za/CompostingProgramme to be notified when the programme will be in their area. The schedule should not be impacted by load-shedding.
July 18th 2017 was the 9th year of the Nelson Mandela Day initiative. The day was started to commemorate the service Mandela gave to South Africa over his lifetime.

As a country we band together to give back 67 minutes of our time to communities and people less fortunate than ourselves.
How we did our bit
This year, the Nox Rentals Family decided to help the hungry people we see every day. We bought loaves of bread, jam, peanut butter, fruit and juice, and transformed our lunch room into a mini kitchen and started with the plan to make 67 lunch packs.
At the end of the day we had made over 100 packs to give!
During the day and at the end of the work day we distributed the packs between us and drove the roads of Cape Town handing out packs to people. There were so many smiles and thanks, even a hug or two!
Today we did a Camps Bay Community Beach Clean, with 42 participants and close to 50 bags filled with litter. The winner of The 41 Burger prize was Henry Phiri.
