Letter to Mayor de Lille: ABOLITION OF PROPERTY RIGHTS

Dear Mayor de Lille,

It has been my experience in matters related to politics in South Africa, to have been deeply associated with the DA and its antecedents since the founding of the Progressive Party in 1959, at which time I was a founder member of the then Progressive Party in Durban. I have participated actively in elections and other political activities ever since on behalf of what is now the DA and have always considered your party to be  the one sane and correct-thinking  element in the maelstrom which has been our political scene for the last 54 years.

It has therefore come as a devastating shock to me, my wife and like-minded friends and colleagues to witness the DA’s current forceful determination to completely eliminate the absolutely essential checks and balances inherent in the existing public participation process when responding to applications to transgress the planning restrictions in current title deeds and the zoning scheme in Cape Town.

To further compound this completely incomprehensible initiative by your Party is its threat to eliminate the powers of the Sub-Councils and SPELUM committees in these matters together with the withdrawal of the democratic objection / appeal
process which, beggars belief, especially coming from what has always been considered as the bastion of democracy in South African politics.

This pending change in the DA’s policy makes an absolute mockery of its very name and is a hammer blow to what little is left of the very basis of democratic ethical standards which the DA has so so enthusiastically espoused during its political life.

We totally support the contents and sentiments contained in the letter from the CBRRA below and urgently request that this initiative by your party  be struck off the agendas of all your future meetings in this respect and abandoned by your Council.

Yours faithfully.
