Letter to Mayor de Lille: Objection to Proposals to demote sub councils and Centralize decision making

Dear Mayor de Lille,

It has come to my attention that your office and the City council are proposing to amend the City's system of delegations for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning (EESP) to minimize public participation and the role of the Sub Councils in planning decisions affecting local communities.  As a senior politician you must surely be aware of the sustained energy and pro-active -involvement of many residents and members of civic associations in local planning decisions. This unselfish commitment local residents has contributed immensely to the character that makes Cape Town a special place to live and work in. Your proposal to centralize decision making is a slap in the face of this commitment.  It also sends a worrying message about your regard for the principles of honest participatory democracy. Over the past years, I have watched the city council's slow but relentless centralizing of power at the expense of effective service provision – everything from inability to curb sewage spills to planning decisions that undermine the sustainability of our community (and inevitably the City).

The City that Works for You! - is no longer working for me - and your proposal to disempower sub-councils and the right of neighbours to comment on developments is the last straw that is turning DA democracy into a farce.  Stop, rethink and regain your integrity - the future of our city and the DA depends on leadership that listens to the locals.

your extremely dissatisfied local,
Kim Kruyshaar
